Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a license to drive an LSV on public roads?
Most states require a valid driver’s license for LSV road use. A few allow LSV operation with a moped license. Check your local DMV rules.
Can I make any golf cart street legal?
No. The cart must meet FMVSS 500 equipment rules: headlights, taillights, turn signals, mirrors, horn, windshield, seat belts, and a VIN. Retrofitting an old cart often costs more than buying a factory LSV.
How do I find my cart’s VIN number?
Look near the driver-side frame rail, under the seat, or on a metal plate on the dashboard or glove box. Factory-built LSVs always carry a 17-digit VIN.
What is the top speed of a street-legal LSV?
Under FMVSS 500, an LSV is limited to 20-25 mph by design. The vehicle is not meant for highways or roads with speed limits above 35 mph.
